What is the story of the anime?
Spice and Wolf follows Kraft Lawrence, a 25-year-old traveling merchant who sells various goods in a fictional world with European influences. His dream is to gather enough money to start his own shop. For seven years, Lawrence has been traveling and gaining experience in trade.
One night, while in the town of Pasloe, he discovers a wolf-deity named Holo in his wagon. Holo, over 600 years old, takes the form of a 15-year-old girl with a wolf’s tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town’s goddess of harvest, responsible for their bountiful wheat harvests over the years. However, Holo feels increasingly isolated and disillusioned as the townspeople shift away from relying on her and adopt their own methods for improving harvests. They have forgotten the promise made to her and criticize her for needing to replenish the soil with smaller harvests, calling her a “fickle god.”
Feeling forsaken and believing she has fulfilled her promise, Holo wishes to return to her homeland in the north, called Yoitsu. She also desires to see how the world has changed during her long stay in one place. Holo bargains with Lawrence to take her along on his travels. As they journey together, her wisdom helps Lawrence increase his profits, but her true nature attracts unwanted attention from the Church.
