What is the story of the anime?

Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to join the Defense Force to fight kaiju after their town is destroyed. At 27, Mina is the captain of the Third Division, but 32-year-old Kafka has repeatedly failed the exam and works in kaiju clean-up. Meeting Reno Ichikawa, an aspiring Defense Force member, rekindles Kafka’s dream. After a kaiju enters his body, Kafka gains the ability to transform into a kaiju and secretly applies to the Defense Force as “Kaiju No. 8.”

During the Defense Force exam, Kafka and Reno meet Kikoru Shinomiya, a kaiju-slaying prodigy who later keeps Kafka’s secret after he saves her from “Kaiju No. 9.” Reno and Kikoru become officers, while Kafka is accepted as a cadet, suspected of hiding something by Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina.

On their first mission, Kafka saves Reno from No. 9, escapes detection, and is later inducted as an officer. The Third Division base is attacked by kaiju, led by “Kaiju No. 10,” but Kafka saves the base, revealing his transformation, and Mina detains him.

Imprisoned, Kafka is tested by Director General Isao Shinomiya. Proving his control over his transformation, Kafka is transferred to the First Division with Kikoru. They stopped an attack on Tokyo, but No. 9 absorbed Isao, becoming stronger and preparing for an invasion of Japan.
