Askeladd commits atrocities and horrific actions continuously in the whole series however his terrific actions are not glorified. For some critics, he is the best character portrayed in the series.

Thorfinn and Askeladd are the main characters of the story. However, Canute ( Kensho Ono) and Thorkell ( Akio Otsuka) are both historical figures and have great importance to the story. Canute undoubtedly plays a significant role as he is a superb parallel to Thorfinn in the manga.
