TT Assen Sports-MotoGP History
TT Assen motorcycle racing has been a part of the world’s history since 1922. It’s one of the oldest races in the world and one of the most famous races globally, too.
The circuit was built in 1922 by John McLean, who owned a motorcycle manufacturing company called Norton. Initially, it was built to test Norton motorcycles. However, it soon gained popularity among drivers, and McLean opened it to the general public.
In 1923, the first TT Assen race took place with only 12 participants. The winner was Alec Bennett on a Norton motorcycle. Those were the days before safety measures were in place; riders did not wear helmets or any other protective gear, and no barriers separated them from spectators.
In later years, when safety measures were implemented on the track, the number of participants multiplied—in 1935, there were over 200 racers! There are still over 200 participants every year (but they’re wearing helmets now).
TT Assen Moto GP- Format
MotoGP is a motorcycle racing competition. The name is derived from the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the international governing body of motorcycle racing and Grand Prix motor racing.
The FIM has established rules for each competition class, with a different premier event for each category. This structure was introduced in 2014: previously, from 1978 to 2013, the premier type was called MotoGP, and before that, it was called 500cc.
The top category is MotoGP. It was formerly known as the Senior TT Assen MotoGP. The class is divided into two categories: MotoGP and 250cc. The competition uses two-cylinder engine four-strokes limited to 65 hp for MotoGP bikes and 50 hp for 250cc bikes. 200cc bikes were used until 2009, when they were replaced by 250cc bikes due to protests from manufacturers over cost-cutting measures introduced by Dorna Sports (the company that manages the series).
The engines must be four strokes only, with two cylinders allowed per bike and an automatic gearbox. The minimum weight in both classes, including fuel, is that riders must be at least tall and have ridden.
