What are FINA World Swimming Championships about?

For those unaware, FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) is also known as Short Course Worlds owing to the distance participants swim during the tournament. The championship takes place in the year FINA does not hold its World Championships. The 2022 event will feature a total of 48 competitions held consecutively over six days. Here is everything you should know about the prestigious 25-meter swimming contest.

The Short Course Worlds Come to Australia!

As you may have heard, FINA was initially scheduled to hold the 16th edition of the international event at the Palace of Water Sports in Kazan, Russia, between December 17 and 22, 2022. However, things took a turn following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the championship was moved to Melbourne. Moreover, the federation has prohibited the officials and swimmers from Russia and Belarus from competing this year.

The change of venue means Australia will hold the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) for the first time. The waterfront city of Melbourne will welcome over a thousand highly trained athletes from more than 180 countries worldwide. Previously, the metropolis hosted the 2007 FINA World Championships and other FINA Swimming World Cups. Meanwhile, FINA also held its 1991 and 1998 World Swimming Championships in Australia.

Qualification Rounds

The qualification rounds for the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) were conducted between July 24 and November 13, 2022. The successful male and female athletes were selected for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley events.

It is also worth noting that for the first time ever, the FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) will hold the 800-meter freestyle swim for men and the 1500 freestyle for women. However, the FINA points systems will determine the qualification for these exciting rounds.

Prize Money

Keeping in line with the previous championships, the prize money for the top eight individual swimmers and relay teams totals a whopping $2,160,000. The best-performing athletes will be able to take home an incredible cash prize, with the amount being equally distributed among the winning team members.

The first-place winner will receive $10,000, while the athletes who come in second and third will take home $8,000 and $7,000, respectively. Moreover, those who rank fourth will win $6,000, fifth-place holders will get $5,000, the sixth-place winners will receive $4,000, the athletes who come in seventh will be awarded $3,000, and the eighth-place winners will take home $2,000.

In addition, FINA will pay $25,000 to the athletes who establish new world records during the upcoming swimming championships in Melbourne.
